When you've had enough
Elijah's prayer under the broom tree sounds a lot like burnout, and God's answer is gentle. Jesus makes the same kind of offer to everyone who is weary.
1 Kings 19:4-8 BSB
…while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
Right after God answered him with fire on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:38-39), Elijah ran for his life and asked to die. God's first answer was not a lecture or a new task but sleep, bread and water, twice, because the road ahead was too long to walk on empty.
Matthew 11:28-30 BSB
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
Jesus doesn't tell weary people to try harder; He invites them to come to Him. He calls Himself gentle and humble in heart, someone you can rest with instead of perform for.
Rest is God's idea
God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3), and He calls His people to rest too. These verses treat rest as a gift, not a reward for finishing everything.
Mark 6:31 BSB
And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
The apostles had just told Jesus all they had done and taught (Mark 6:30). His response wasn't a new assignment; it was an invitation to get away and rest.
Psalm 23:1-3 BSB
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.
The shepherd makes his sheep lie down and leads them to quiet water. Restoring your soul is His work, not one more item on your list.
Psalm 127:2 BSB
In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat—for He gives sleep to His beloved.
Rising early and staying up late can't earn what God gives freely. Sleep is described here as His gift to the people He loves.
Exodus 33:14 BSB
And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Moses had been told to lead a whole nation through the wilderness, and he asked who would go with him (Exodus 33:12). God's answer was His own presence, and rest.
Ecclesiastes 4:6 BSB
Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and pursuit of the wind.
Ecclesiastes is honest about the cost of nonstop work. One handful held in peace is worth more than two full ones that leave you pursuing the wind.
Strength when you're running on empty
These verses don't ask you to dig deeper. They point to the strength God gives to people who have none left.
Isaiah 40:29-31 BSB
He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
Even the young and strong run out, so being worn out is not a failure of faith. The strength in this promise comes to those who wait upon the LORD, not to those who push harder.
Jeremiah 31:25 BSB
…for I will refresh the weary soul and replenish all who are weak.
God spoke this through Jeremiah about His people coming home from captivity (Jeremiah 31:23-24). He doesn't just tell the weary to cope; He promises to refresh them Himself.
2 Corinthians 12:9 BSB
But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.
Paul asked God three times to take away what he called a thorn in his flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7-8), and God answered with grace instead. Your weakness is not where God's work in you stops.
Psalm 73:26 BSB
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
The psalmist admits that body and heart can give out. God is named as the strength that remains when ours is gone.
Hope for the long road back
Getting your strength back can be slow. These verses are for the mornings in between.
Psalm 62:1 BSB
In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him.
David wrote this psalm while people were trying to bring him down (Psalm 62:3-4). He found rest not because things got easier, but in God Himself.
Lamentations 3:22-23 BSB
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
These lines sit in the middle of a book of grief over Jerusalem's fall. God's mercy doesn't run out overnight; it is new again every morning, tomorrow's included.
1 Peter 5:7 BSB
Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Tiredness and worry often travel together. Peter's reason to hand your worries over is simple: God cares for you.
Galatians 6:9 BSB
Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
This is for people who are doing good and growing tired, not a command to do more. The harvest comes in due time, God's time, and rest is part of not giving up.

Questions about burnout and the Bible
- What does the Bible say about burnout?
- The Bible doesn't use the word, but 1 Kings 19 describes something close to it. Right after God answered him with fire on Mount Carmel, Elijah ran for his life, sat down under a broom tree and asked to die. God answered with sleep, bread and water, twice, before He gave him any new work. Jesus also invites everyone who is weary and burdened to come to Him for rest (Matthew 11:28-30).
- What is a good Bible verse for exhaustion?
- Matthew 11:28, where Jesus invites all who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest. Isaiah 40:29-31, Jeremiah 31:25 and Elijah's story in 1 Kings 19:4-8 speak to deep tiredness too.
- Is it wrong for a Christian to rest?
- No. God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3). Jesus invited His busy apostles to come away with Him and rest (Mark 6:31), and Psalm 127:2 calls sleep a gift God gives to the people He loves. Rest is part of following Jesus, not a break from it.
- Where can I ask someone to pray for me?
